School Sponsorships

10Jan09

During our recent trip to Gulu, Abby, Autumn, Brendan and I discovered that the children we worked with in 2006 and 2007 had lost their school sponsorships.  Due to many friends being moved by the children’s stories and stepping in with funding, we were able to send the children back to school!  It is our desire to continue to support these children through the remainder of secondary school.  If you have donated, thank you very much–you have brought immense hope to them!  If you are interested in helping these valiant children continue on through school, please contact me at haley@candlelithuts.com.

Thank you!

Fear or Love?

20Nov08

It has now been two weeks (and three days) since returning from my beautiful Acholi Land. It is cold here as I sit in my 40 degree apartment and remember the warmth of days gone by. The last weeks have been filled with dreaming for the future and hoping for sunshine in my present. Abby and I have been reflecting on how we will remain connected, how we begin a new organization…how Autumn and Brendan will join us when they return in December. What is the paradigm I will choose to live out of? I heard Gabriella Guitierrez y Muhs speak today on justice and racism. She said, “There are two ways to live; out of fear or out of love.” This leaves me asking the question of myself even now, as I struggle with relationships and holding on to Uganda. What am I choosing? Fear or love? With what emotion will I reach back towards the great continent? In fact, I don’t believe I can reach back out of fear, fear will restrain me here. Instead, I must live more boldly here, with more commitment, more freedom and more love.
